DIY: Air Freshener

If you’re reading this, hopefully you’ve chosen to rid your house of toxic household products. My family did this three years ago, and we’ve YET to be sick. Three years! I’m telling ya, you can’t afford not to get rid of the toxins in your house.

Air fresheners are one product I never thought could be remotely damaging to my body. It smells good, how can that be harmful? Well friends, I was wrong. Way wrong. Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and air freshener are among the top damaging household products. So, what’s a girl to do?? Yup. Make my own. There’s countless scents you could make, so I’ll share just a few to get you started. All you need is a 2 oz glass spray bottle. You can find them on or

Bathroom Spray

  • 5 drops Purification
  • 5 drops Lemon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Filled with tap water

Fall Scent

  • 5 drops Orange
  • 1 drop Nutmeg
  • 1 drop Clove
  • 1 drop Cinnamon Bark
  • Pinch of salt
  • Filled with tap water

Christmas Spirit

  • 10 drops Christmas Spirit
  • Pinch of salt
  • Filled with tap water

These air fresheners also work wonders in the car, because let’s face it, cars can get fuuuuunky. Shew! Spray them in a fresh load of laundry, in dirty gym bag, or your teenagers shoes. Anywhere you want to, you know, freshen! The skies the limit.

And as always, I’m only speaking about Young Living essential oils. It’s the only company that produces their oils with the highest quality control and guarantees it. Other oils companies may contain synthetic ingredients and fillers, aka TOXINS. Which is the whole point of making our own toxin free products, remember? *wink*

DIY Laundry Detergent

Last week, I shared my story about getting the toxins out of my house. And now, as promised, I’m sharing some of my favorite DIY household products this week so you can replace those toxic products with high quality ones. First up, liquid laundry detergent. If you want to learn more about the toxic ingredients in laundry detergent, read about it here. They explained it so much better than I could even begin to. Let’s just say a few key words/phrases that stand out: asthma attacks, formaldehyde, carcinogenic, kills cells and damages DNA, and adversely effect fetal development and physical function.

  • 1-gallon container
  • 1/4 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp Castile soap (fragrance free)
  • 15 drops Citrus Fresh
  • 1 gallon tap water

Combine all ingredients in gallon container and mix together. Use 1/3 cup per load. 1 gallon makes 48 loads. Cost? $6!!  It literally takes 2 minutes to make and smells incredible. I’m not talking the overwhelming smell that store-bought laundry detergents have where y can smell them a mile away; I’m talking fresh, clean, nature-y smell.  AND, it cuts down on the static in my clothes, where I don’t even need dryer sheets. (Let’s not even get started on how toxic dryer sheets are.)

You can also use Lavender or Purification depending on what you have and what scent you prefer. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Scared Straight

We’ve all seen these labels on laundry detergents and many household cleaners. But how many times have you stopped to think, “WHY does my laundry detergent have stuff that can hurt me?” If it can hurt you when swallowed or get in your eyes, why wouldn’t it hurt you when put on the skin??

I, like so many others, was naive for years. Years and years. I just found out about the toxic ingredients in household products 3 years ago. It was then that my family and I made an immediate change. We were scared straight. We got a box, went through every room in our apartment, and threw away those toxin ridden products that we didn’t know were harming our bodies. Laundry detergent, toothpaste, air fresheners, cleaning products, medicines (gasp, I know!), dryer sheets, body wash, hair products, and on and on. It actually goes further than that because at the time I was an extreme couponer.. So I had stockpiles of everything listed! No wonder I could get all those products at rock bottom price, they were filled with crap.

I know what you’re thinking. Hannah, surely those little products don’t make that big of a difference. What harm will they really do? HARM. DAMAGE. Black pirate flag (waaaaay past the red flag!). That’s what they’ll do! Let me ask you a question. How many times in the last year have you been sick? What about the last three years?? I am telling ya the honest truth.. My family and I have not been sick in three years. I can physically point at this decision in my life and tell you THIS is what’s made all the difference. Make a decision for your family’s health and throw those toxic products away! I’m begging you. Don’t keep a few. Don’t even keep one. Throw. Them. Away. Health is a choice my friends. Be proactive about yours.

Ok, rant over. Can you tell I’m getting passionate over here?

Now that all that crap is out of your lives too, you can start replacing them with high quality products. Ones that will heal your body instead of harming it. If you’re a DIY kinda person, you’ll appreciate “The Chemical Free Home” by Melissa Poepping. If you’re a “ain’t nobody got time for that, just tell me where to buy it” kinda person, Young Living has some bomb products. The entire Thieves line (cleaner, toothpaste, mouthwash, wipes, dish soap), body wash, ART facial care, Tender Tush baby team, and even laundry detergent are just a few of what they offer. And most of the products are highly concentrated so you just need a dab.

Next week I’ll post some of my favorite DIY recipes for household products. Can’t give away all my secrets in one post, can I?? *wink*

The Foot Bone’s Connected to the Leg Bone

“The leg bone’s connect to the knee bone. The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone. The thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone. Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones!”

Anyone else movin’ and groovin’ in their kitchen? No?? Just me??! Oh dear. Maybe it’s the cute little 14 month old in my house, but I have so many kid songs stuck in my head these days. Seriously, I wake up at night singing VeggieTales. Oh dear!

Anyways.. Did you know that your foot is connected to every part of your body?! It’s called Vita Flex points.

Vita Flex is based on a network of reflex points that stimulate all of the body systems. When applying essential oils to the various vita flex points, you can effect the area of the body directly related to it. Isn’t that mind-blowing and genius? God is so creative. My favorite way to do this is on the bottom on my big toe, which is related to my brain. I.e. When I’m tired and need to wake my brain up, or need a serious mood boost. Also, when applying essential oils to babies, using the bottom of the feet is the best place for application. Your feet have large pores, so the oils are absorbed quickly.

Oh, vita flex is also a great way to apply those stinky oils so we don’t have to continually smell their stinkiness *wink*

Oil of the Week: Stress Away

We’ve all been there. Needing a time out! Time to close our eyes, count to ten, and take a deep breath. As a mom of a toddler, wife of a business owner, and let’s face it, a woman in today’s world.. I take time outs often. That’s why I’m a huge fan of Stress Away.

Stress Away is an essential oil blend that helps us deal with daily stress and tense moments. It promotes relaxation and improves mental response. Lord knows I need all the help I can get here some days. Can I get an AMEN??

This sweet blend is made of Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, and Lavendar. Mmmmmm! Can we all just take a moment to breathe in the sweet aroma?! Stress Away helps ground emotions, stimulate the nervous system, and renew the spirit. It is seriously miraculous. Time out in a bottle. Yes, please!

I love rubbing Stress Away in my wrists, over my heart, and behind my ears. Actually, I attached the roller top fitament that came with my Premium Starter Kit, for an even easier application! Here’s how I did it:

  1. Untwist the cap of Stress Away.
  2. Lay the cap on top, the give a half twist so that it’s barely on.
  3. Slowly pull cap to the right, taking the drop reducer with it.
  4. Place the roller top inside the cap so you don’t touch it (reducing the chance of contaminants).
  5. Twist cap fully back on Stress Away. Voilà! Your own Stress Away roller bottle.

Now it’s an easy as throwing Stress Away in your purse, so you never have to go without it again. Also amazing in an Epsom salts bath! Put 5 drops in a cup of Epsom salts, dissolve in warm bath water, and take a much deserved time out. OH! And I almost forgot to mention, this is my go-to sleep oil. Rolled on my big toe, wrists, and behind ears, I fall into a deep deep sleep!

And I’m not joking about closing my eyes, taking a deep breath, and counting to ten. Try it! And thank me later *wink

New Month, Fresh Start

The beginning of the month is always so refreshing. A whole month to start over. Set new goals. Try again to fulfill what I didn’t last month. The slate is once again wiped clean.

Most of the time I vow to once again work out consistently, eat cleaner, and spend time with God daily. Look at the month ahead, and plan accordingly.

Somehow, this month seems different. Maybe because it’s also the beginning of the school year. Double “clean slate” whammy. Maybe because Starbucks is about to roll out their PSL and fall brings fantastic memories. Or maybe it’s because last month was rockin’ and I can’t wait to set new goals for this month and see what God has in store for September.

You know what I mean, though? Newness is so refreshing. What goals have you set for yourself for this month? If you could do anything, anything, what would it be? Dream with me. Let’s go far! Let’s trust a God with the unimaginable. Let’s do this!!

While I sit here and dream about this month, I’m rolling on my current fave oil: Abundance. Because yes! Who doesn’t want to live an abundant life?? What’s your favorite oil to use and dream about the future? Frankincense? Joy? Highest Potential? Whatever it is, whip it out and roll on right now.

Dream Big roll-on

20 drops Abundance

10 drops Frankincense

10 drops Orange

Fill remaining roller bottle with FCO (fractionated coconut oil)

Roll on wrists, over heart, and behind ears at the beginning of every day. State your goals for the month. Say a prayer over them. Then be proactive! Let’s do this. Can’t wait to see what happens this month!!
